Profile
Shuyu Yang is a Lecturer in Fashion Marketing and Brand Communication. Shuyu holds a PhD in Fashion Marketing and Management from the University of Manchester, as well as a BA in Fashion Design and Engineering, spanning both art and science disciplines. Prior to joining the University of Leeds, Shuyu worked as a Teaching Associate and Guest Lecturer at the University of Manchester during his PhD studies.
Shuyu is an interdisciplinary researcher working across marketing and management, fashion, and art studies. His PhD project, grounded in Consumer Culture Theory, explored how gendered ideology operates through male beauty influencers in China. Shuyu is currently involved in several ongoing research projects. These include an Academy of Marketing-funded project in collaboration with Dr. Shuo Feng, titled Consumer Resistance Towards Capitalist Patriarchy: An Exploration of Female Queers’ Migration to Rural Communities in China. He also leads a Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub (DCCH)-funded project titled An Exploration of How UK-based Diaspora Chinese Queer Ravers Resist White-centrism Through Queer Nightlife. His work focuses on neglected and marginalised voices, engaging with themes of gender, queerness, and disruptive technologies.
With extensive experience in the fashion and creative industries, Shuyu has held various roles including fashion designer, visual merchandiser, fashion buyer, and editor. Shuyu hopes his teaching and research can help him grow as a person and contribute to making the world a better place.

He is an interdisciplinary researcher in marketing and culture. As an interpretivist researcher, his work focuses on consumer and fashion contexts.
His research interests include consumer culture, critical marketing and management theory, and critical fashion studies.
